Phase I is objective type test, consisting of 200 questions. Each question carries 1 mark. So, total marks are 200. From 2013, it will be conducted online.

Try previous year papers to see at level you stand at present. (see this page)

Important things to keep in mind

  1. All the sections do not have equal questions.
  2. Each section has its individual cutoff (see the exam)
  3. There is negative marking of 1/4 marks.

 General Awareness80 45
 Reasoning60 45
    Quantitative Aptitude 30 20
 English 30 20
 TOTAL 200

General Awareness

GA carries maximum marks out of all the sections. Majority of GA questions are picked from Economy (about 75%) and Current Affairs.

Questions from economy may include

  • basic macroeconomic fundamentals
  • questions on functions of organisations
  • government policy or schemes
  • any person's association with organisation
The list of not exhaustive but covers 90% of questions

Books

1. Start with NCERT to build a good base - download from NCERT website. NCERT books are available in 3 languages - hindi, english and Urdu
        - Indian Economic Development - class XI
        - Indian People and Economy - class XII
        - Macroeconomics - class XII

2. Move ahead with

NOTE that I am NOT recommending Dutt Sundaram, Mishra Puri and other such heavyweights. Though they might help you in phase II examination

For Current Affairs

1. read a newspaper daily (especially the economy page). I recommend reading The Hindu, Indian Express or Economic Times. Do not read more than 1 newspaper; it wont be required.

2. Get India 2015. Its an yearbook published by government. Read very selectively only the topic relevant from economic viewpoint, since this is a huge book.

3. Best online source for current affairs - gktoday.in

Reasoning

The next most important section !

The section requires i) conceptual clarity and ii) consistent and continuos practice. In last 20-25 days, take out 1 hour daily to do Reasoning questions. Keep in touch with it till the very end.

There are some good books in the market. some of them are mentioned here. Do not make it a target to finish the book till the very end. But do some questions of each type on regular interval.

Quantitative Aptitude

Maths is seen as a monster by most of candidates. The weightage is not very high but you still have to secure the minimum cut off. Be careful since there is negative marking. If maths is not your forte, mark the answer cautiously.

Try to consolidate your areas of strength. Start with NCERT books of class VII - X class, if you are scoring 10 or below out of 50 in trial/mock test(remember we started with a test!). And buy 1 (yes, just 1 !) of the following books and keep on practicing. Keep in touch with this subject till the day the exam.

Since no syllabus has been prescribed by RBI, I am putting those topics here which I have found most relevant for RBI phase 1

Operation on brackets

Linear equations
Average, alligiation
Ratio/Proportion
Profit, Loss, %, Simple interest and Compound interest
Arithmetic and Geography progression.
Time speed distance and Work
Permutation, Combination, Probability
Geometry: Area and Volume
Venn Diagrams

Books

1. NCERT books can be downloaded here -  NCERT books - NCERT books are available in English, Hindi and Urdu languages.

2. Besides, the most common book prescribed for mostly all such exams is RS Aggrawal. It is good for understanding and practice. Some of the best books have been provided here in the following list. Pick only 1 of the 2.

Do not focus on geometry, trigonometry and functions.

English

This is another subject which is not liked by many. Some things are important - i) improving your grammar, ii) improving comprehension skills. Books suggested here are for this purpose. Again, remember you must clear the cut off, even if you hate the subject.

For grammar, Wren and Martin is available in Hindi and regional languages also(Click here). Just buy one book for exercises only. If not, then buy Objective General English by SP Bakshi or TMH's - its give you the basic rules in easy way.
